Real Friendship Is Spiritual Discipling Relationships

God’s Plan is Discipleship

Matthew 28:18-20
18Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in[a] the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

1) Depth of Relationship – knowing each other’s heart – how we feel about God and life
1 Peter 1:21-22 (NIV)
22 Now that you have purified yourselves by obeying the truth so that you have sincere love for your brothers, love one another deeply, from the heart.

2) Caring Relationships – compassionate heart toward each other. Empathy not apathy
James 2:14-17 (NIV)
14 What good is it, my brothers, if a man claims to have faith but has no deeds? Can such faith save him? 15 Suppose a brother or sister is without clothes and daily food. 16 If one of you says to him, “Go, I wish you well; keep warm and well fed,” but does nothing about his physical needs, what good is it? 17 In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.

3) Courageous Relationships – dealing honestly and openly with sin
Galatians 6:1-2 (NIV)
Brothers, if someone is caught in a sin, you who are spiritual should restore him gently. But watch yourself, or you also may be tempted. 2 Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.

4) Encouraging Relationships – we need to build each other up, encourage and respect each other.
1 Thessalonians 5:10-12
10He died for us so that, whether we are awake or asleep, we may live together with him. 11Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing. 12Now we ask you, brothers, to respect those who work hard among you, who are over you in the Lord and who admonish you.

5) Daily Relationships – our relationships are only as good as the time we invest in them, to prevent hard hearts.
Hebrews 3:12-13 (NIV)
12 See to it, brothers, that none of you has a sinful, unbelieving heart that turns away from the living God. 13 But encourage one another daily, as long as it is called Today, so that none of you may be hardened by sin’s deceitfulness.

6) Inspiring Relationships – inspiration and conviction are the goal. Friendship is Key!
Hebrews 10:24-25 (NIV)
[24] Let us think of ways to motivate one another to acts of love and good works. [25] And let us not neglect our meeting together, as some people do, but encourage one another, especially now that the day of his return is drawing near.

**Discipleship is a spiritual relationship/friendship meant to help and inspire us to live the new life God has given us.
