Fear Not, Be Still

Isaiah 35:4 ESV “Say to those who have an anxious heart, “Be strong; *fear not! Behold, your God will come with vengeance, with the recompense of God. He will come and save you.”
 
Exodus 14:13-14 NCV “But Moses answered, “Don’t be afraid! Stand still and you will see the Lord save you today. You will never see these Egyptians again after today.You only need to remain calm; the Lord will fight for you.”
 
Romans 4:18
“When there was nothing left to hope for, Abraham still hoped and believed…”
  • Remaining calm can be difficult but God always encourages us to be still and let him save us.
  • God fights for us
  • Standing still means to control your emotions and let God take control.
  • It means being able to calm yourself with God’s spirit in you and trusting God to save you.
  • It means that you have a relationship with God that can help you calm your emotions which means that we have to have conviction that we need God every day.
  • It means you actually “value” your relationship with God
  • Do you see a daily need for devotion to God?
  • How is your walk with God going?
  • Signs it’s going well.. -it’s consistent, daily -there’s actual bible study -there’s real prayers -there’s faith with action -there’s a God focus (not man) -there’s conviction overflow -there’s an outward focus
 
Psalm 42:5-6
“Why am I so overwrought? Why am I so disturbed? Why can’t I just hope in God? Despite all my emotions, I will believe and praise the One Who saves me and is my life. My God, my soul is so traumatized; the only help is remembering You, wherever I may be…”
  • How much do your emotions interfere with your relationship with God..reading and praying every day?
  • Our emotions should lead us to God not away from him.
Ex. Seeing God answer prayers increases our faith and draws us closer to him!
 
1 Samuel 12:16 NCV “Now “stand still” and see the great thing the Lord will do before your eyes.”
 
Isaiah 65:24 NCV “I will provide for their needs before they ask, and I will help them “while they are still asking” for help.”
  • God knows what we need and is willing to answer even before we pray

Lots of kinds of anxiety

Psalm 127:2 ESV “It is in vain that you rise up early and go late to rest, eating the bread of anxious toil; for he gives to his beloved sleep.”
  • Anxious toil -anxious heart -anxious striving
  • Signs of anxious toil; -nervous sleep, nervous work
  • We should be able to sleep in peace because we ultimately trust God.
  • Fear and control can replaces a relationship with God.
  • Fear strangles us, it cuts off the oxygen to our faith.
  • Fear stifles the Holy Spirit
  • We must surrender all our fears to God

Fear Not…be still

Ecclesiastes 11:4 ESV “He who observes the wind will not sow, and he who regards the clouds will not reap.”
  • Fear is distracting & paralyzing.
  • It keeps us from moving forward in our life.
  • “Fearful strife” and “control” “nervous working” wears us out.
  • How much are you being lead by fear verses God’s spirit?

Still not Spiritual……….Reflects our walk with God

1 Corinthians 3:3 NCV “You are still not spiritual, because there is jealousy and quarreling among you, and this shows that you are not spiritual. You are acting like people of the world.”
 
Signs of being worldly
  • What does the bible say makes us not spiritual?
  • Jealousy, quarreling?
  • Competing with one another instead of loving one another. -This is a sign of not having a deep love for God or conviction about your walk because we are more focused on men than pleasing God.
  • Who do we compete with?
  • Who are we jealous of?
  • Who are we quarreling with?
Are you more Motivated by God or other people? Are you more Fleshly or spiritual? Are you more Secure or insecure? Are you more Controlling or trusting?
 

Anxious Fears

Psalm 34:4 MSG “God met me more than halfway, he freed me from my anxious fears.”
  • Fears…..They stay with you. They stick to your heart and it’s hard to let go or shake it off.
  • Fears…..They steal your faith
 
Jeremiah 17:7-8 GW “Blessed is the person who trusts the LORD. The LORD will be his confidence. He will be like a tree that is planted by water. It will send its roots down to a stream. It will not be afraid in the heat of summer. Its leaves will turn green. It will not be anxious during droughts. It will not stop producing fruit.”
 
Daniel 7:15 ESV “As for me, Daniel, “my spirit” within me was anxious, and the visions of my head alarmed me.”
 
Psalm 42:6 Voice “My God, my soul is so traumatized; the only help is remembering You wherever I may be.”
  • “anxious spirit” or a “traumatized soul”
  • Instead of peace, calm or trust
  • Our relationship with God is the only thing that can rescue us from an anxious spirit.
  • When we lack conviction about walking with God or putting God first we will automatically give way to fear and anxiety
Matthew 6:25 ESV “Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing?”
  • Anxious about material needs
  • Anxious about your life
  • Will I get a house?
  • Will I get a 401k?
  • Will I get furniture?
  • Will I get ——-fill in blank?
  • Will I get to travel?
  • Idolatry?
 
Psalm 37:7-8 NIV “Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for him; do not fret when people succeed in their ways, when they carry out their wicked schemes. Refrain from anger and turn from wrath; do not fret—it leads only to evil.”
 
Matthew 6:27 ESV “And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life?”
  • Anxious about present life
  • We can’t add anything to your life by worrying about it.
  • Therefore worry is destructive.
 
Matthew 6:31 ESV “Therefore do not be anxious, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?'”
 
Matthew 6:34 ESV “Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.”
  • Anxious about the future
  • Always planning(controlling) your future
  • Always thinking about tomorrow
  • Better to live in and be grateful for present.
  • To Enjoy what God has given you today
 
Ecclesiastes 5:19-20 NIV “Moreover, when God gives someone wealth and possessions, and the ability to enjoy them, to accept their lot and be happy in their toil—this is a gift of God. They seldom reflect on the days of their life, because God keeps them occupied with gladness of heart.”
Mark 13:11 ESV
“And when they bring you to trial and deliver you over, do not be anxious beforehand what you are to say, but say whatever is given you in that hour, for it is not you who speak, but the Holy Spirit.”
  • Anxious about speaking
  • Not wanting to do God’s will
  • Not wanting to lead
  • Not wanting to grow or extend yourself
Luke 10:41-42 ESV “But the Lord answered her, “Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things,but one thing is necessary. Mary has chosen the good portion, which will not be taken away from her.”
  • Anxious about responsibilities
  • Are you Being Anxious and controlled about many things?
  • Nervous responsibilities?
 
Philippians 2:27-28 ESV “Indeed he was ill, near to death. But God had mercy on him, and not only on him but on me also, lest I should have *sorrow upon sorrow. I am the more eager to send him, therefore, that you may rejoice at seeing him again, and that I may be less anxious.”
  • Anxious about our concern for others
  • Anxious sorrow
Philippians 4:6-7 ESV “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”
  • God simply says do not be anxious but to pray and be thankful
  • This is easier said than done. Many times we go over that pretty quickly but we don’t actually question ourselves
  • Do I control my emotions with my relationship with God and able to calm myself and be still and trusting God no matter what?
  • Am I Actually devoted to prayer every day?
  • How much I’m actually praying through things
  • Am I grateful for every day
  • Do I have a deep conviction about relationship with God?
 
Psalm 46:10 NIV “He says, “Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.”
 
How much Does anxiety lead my family? my husband? affect my children? and mostly steal my relationship with God as it replaces faith then God’s peace will guard your heart, mind and emotions in Christ.

  • God promises that he can free us from all our anxious fears
  • What does it mean when God says he met me more than halfway?
 
Exodus 14:14 NIV “The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still.”
 
Psalm 4:3 ESV “But know that the LORD has set apart the godly for himself; the LORD hears when I call to him.
 
Psalm 46:10 NIV “He says, “Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.”
 
Jeremiah 9:23-24 NLT “This is what the LORD says: “Don’t let the wise boast in their wisdom, or the powerful boast in their power, or the rich boast in their riches. But those who wish to boast should boast in this alone: that they truly know me and understand that I am the LORD who demonstrates unfailing love and who brings justice and righteousness to the earth, and that I delight in these things.
