Stand In Awe

Stand in Awe of God – Bible Study

Habakkuk 3:2

“LORD, I have heard of your fame; I stand in awe of your deeds, LORD. Repeat them in our day, in our time make them known; in wrath remember mercy.”

Job 25:2

“Dominion and awe belong to God; he establishes order in the heights of heaven.”

Zephaniah 2:11

“The LORD will be awesome to them. For He will reduce to nothing all the gods of the earth; People shall worship Him, each one from his place, indeed all the shores of the nations.”

Psalm 103:1-2

Psalm 104:1-3

Psalm 105:1-2

“I will extol You, my God, O King;
And I will bless Your name forever and ever.
Every day I will bless You,
And I will praise Your name forever and ever.
Great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised;
And His greatness is unsearchable.

One generation shall praise Your works to another,
And shall declare Your mighty acts.
I will meditate on the glorious splendor of Your majesty,
And on Your wondrous works.
Men shall speak of the might of Your awesome acts,
And I will declare Your greatness.”

1. When God Is No Longer Awesome!

When we do not revere his most awesome name (Jesus read the OT Bible) If you don’t read the OT you will miss the awesome power of God!

Deuteronomy 28:58-59

“If you do not carefully follow all the words of this law, which are written in this book, and do not revere this glorious and awesome name–the LORD your God–the LORD will send fearful plagues on you and your descendants, harsh and prolonged disasters, and severe and lingering illness. Among those nations you will find no repose, no resting place for the sole of your foot. There the LORD will give you and anxious mind, eyes weary with longing, and a despairing heart. You will live in constant suspense, filled with dread both night and day, never sure of your life.”

Jeremiah 2:11-13

“Has a nation ever changed its gods?
(Yet they are not gods at all.)
But my people have exchanged their Glory
for the worthless idols.
Be appalled at this, O heavens,
and shudder with great horror,”
declares the LORD.
“My people have committed two sins:
They have forsaken me,
the spring of living water,
and have dug their own cisterns,
broken cisterns that cannot hold water.

Your wickedness will punish you;
your backsliding will rebuke you.
Consider then and realize
how evil and bitter it is for you
when you forsake the LORD your God
and have no awe of me, declares the Lord, the LORD Almighty.”

2. Stand In Awe Of God’s Word

King Josiah was 8 years old when he became king. When he was a young man in his 20’s he had the temple re-opened, repaired and in the process found the book of the law of God. It was lost. He had grown up all his life, without hearing the Word of God.

2 Kings 22:19

“Because your heart was responsive and you humbled yourself before the LORD when you heard what I have spoken against the place and its people, that they would become accursed and laid waste, and because you tore your robes and wept in my presence, I have heard you, declares the LORD.”

Nehemiah 8:3, 5-6, 9

“all the people assembled as one man in the square before the Water Gate. They told Ezra the scribe to bring out the Book of the Law of Moses, which the LORD had commanded for Israel. So on the first day of the seventh month Ezra the priest brought the Law before the assembly, which was made up of men and women and all who were able to understand. He read it aloud from daybreak till noon as he faced the square before the Water Gate in the presence of the men, women and others who could understand. And all the people listened attentively to the Book of the Law.
v. 5-6 Ezra opened the book. All the people could see him because he was standing above them; and as he opened it, the people all stood up. Ezra praised the LORD, the great God; and all the people lifted their hands and responded, “Amen! Amen!” Then they bowed down and worshiped the LORD with their faces to the ground.
v. 9 “Then Nehemiah the governor, Ezra the priest and scribe, and the Levites who were instructing the people said to them all, “This day is sacred to the LORD your God. Do not mourn or weep.” For all of the people have been weeping as they listened to the words of the Law.”

3. Stand In Awe Begins With Caring!

Luke 7:11-13

“Soon afterward, Jesus went to a town called Nain, and His disciples and a large crowd went along with Him. as He approached the town gate, a dead person was being carried out–the only son of his mother, and she was a widow. And a large crowd from the two was with her. When the Lord saw her, His heart went out to her and He said, “don’t cry.” Then he went up and touched the coffin, and those carrying it stood still. He said, “young man, I say to you, get up!” The dead man sat up and began to talk, and Jesus gave him back to his mother. They were all filled with awe and praised God. “A great prophet has appeared among us,” they said. “God has come to help His people.”
