Deep Convictions

1 Thessalonians 1:5
“For we know, brothers and sisters loved by God, that he has chosen you, because our gospel came to you not simply with words but also with power, with the Holy Spirit and deep conviction. You know how we lived among you for your sake.”

Q: What does it mean to have Deep Convictions?

Q: What are things we do that do not require deep convictions?
– chores around the house….making your bed each day?
– cleaning the house
– shopping for food
– others?

Q: What does require us to have deep convictions or a level of convictions to do?
– our finances and bills
– serious health issues
– driving on 2 lane road with oncoming traffic
1 Thessalonians 1:2-5 (Message)
“Every time we think of you, we thank God for you. Day and night you’re in our prayers as we call to mind your work of faith, your labor of love, and your patience of hope in following our Master, Jesus Christ, before God our Father. It is clear to us, friends, that God not only loves you very much but also has put his hand on you for something special. When the Message we preached came to you, it wasn’t just words. Something happened in you. The Holy Spirit put steel in your convictions.”

God not only loves you……but has put his hand on you for something special
Something happened in you!
Remember when you studied the Cross for the 1st time? How did it impact your heart?
The Holy Spirit put steel in your convictions!

Caleb: A Man Of Deep Convictions

Numbers 13:26-33 NIV
“They came back to Moses and Aaron and the whole Israelite community at Kadesh in the Desert of Paran. There they reported to them and to the whole assembly and showed them the fruit of the land. They gave Moses this account: “We went into the land to which you sent us, and it does flow with milk and honey! Here is its fruit. But the people who live there are powerful, and the cities are fortified and very large. We even saw descendants of Anak there. The Amalekites live in the Negev; the Hittites, Jebusites and Amorites live in the hill country; and the Canaanites live near the sea and along the Jordan. ” Then Caleb silenced the people before Moses and said, “We should go up and take possession of the land, for we can certainly do it.” But the men who had gone up with him said, “We can’t attack those people; they are stronger than we are.” And they spread among the Israelites a bad report about the land they had explored. They said, “The land we explored devours those living in it. All the people we saw there are of great size. We saw the Nephilim there (the descendants of Anak come from the Nephilim). We seemed like grasshoppers in our own eyes, and we looked the same to them.”

– Moses sends out 12 leaders as spies to explore the Promise Land
– The 12 spies explore the land then come back and give Moses a report of how incredible the land is!
– The promise land is lush, flowing with “milk and honey!”
– THEN they began to say to Moses and all Israel:
“The people are large there – huge – sons of Anak!”
– They were full of fear and unbelief
– They begin to say “Impossible” this task the Lord has give us is!IMPOSSIBLE
– They people are giants and the land swallows people up! (v32)
– We cannot take this land – we cannot do it! V31
– We look like grasshoppers in our own eyes…..v33
THEN we SEE what Deep Convictions are all about:
ONE person stands up and speaks his convictions – Caleb
All by himself – he speaks up and says
“We can certainly take the land”
– Caleb heard God’s Promise to all Israel
– HE believed the Promise
– EVEN though he was all ALONE
– He took the unpopular stand!
– Caleb was resolved to obey the Lord even if others didn’t agree with him!
He was willing to stand out!
He was willing to stand up!
You know you have deep convictions when you’re not interested in pleasing other people BUT only God!
Doesn’t bother you to be THE ONLY ONE……
YOU BELIEVE…..You And God make a majority!

Q: When do you feel the pressure to please the crowd, please your friends, feel the pressure to “go along w everyone else”?

Q: When do you hear that little voice that says…..”don’t stand out, don’t raise your hand, don’t say anything.”

Jesus: Man Of Deep Personal Convictions!

– Daily Special Time With God – Mark 1:35, Hebrews 5:7
– Drove out the temple money changers – John 2:13
– Woman caught in adultery – John 8
– Confronts the religious leaders hypocrisy in Matt 15:1-9
– Rebukes the religious in Matthew 23:1-36 “dead men’s bones” “white washed tombs”
Jesus was not about pleasing other people or pleasing the crowd or just saying the popular thing!
Jesus was willing to stand up, stand out and believe the truth!
Jesus was willing to stand all alone with deep personal convictions!

Deep Convictions Must Come From Scriptures

Matthew 4:1-4 NIV
“Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the desert to be tempted by the devil. After fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry. The tempter came to him and said, “If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread.” Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’ “
– The Spirit of God LEADS Jesus to the desert of TESTING.
– Have you been to the “desert of testing?”
– You will experience times when you are all alone and tested in every way possible!
– HOW DEEP are your convictions?

Imagine 40 days and 40 nights with no FOOD or WATER?
How weak did Jesus feel?
How intense were his hunger pains?
How tempted was Jesus when the devil said, “turn these stones to bread”?
Jesus overcome the devil’s temptations w Scriptures!
He found POWER and STRENGTH in the Scriptures!
EVERY response he had he used the SCRIPTURES!
WHERE DO YOUR CONVICTIONS COME FROM?
Do your convictions come from just your feelings?
– If I feel it deep enough, than that should work?
Do your convictions just come from more knowledge?
– If I read more books, then my intellect should be enough?
EXAMINE WHERE YOUR CONVICTIONS COME FROM?
Convictions or Intentions?
HOW POWERFUL IS THE WORD OF GOD?

Jeremiah 23:29 NIV
“Is not my word like fire,” declares the Lord, “and like a hammer that breaks a rock in pieces.”
– The Word Of God is like a HAMMER!
– The Word Of God is like a FIRE!

Ephesians 6:17 NIV
“Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.”
-The Word Of God is like a SWORD!

Overcome pornography…..sins of impurity.
Ex. Joshua 1:8-9 one of my weapons!! My hammer!
Overcome doubts/unbelief!
Romans 8 more than conquerors!
Rewire my brain/heart
JESUS HAD TO DEPEND ON GOD’S WORD TO CRUSH SATAN’S TEMPTATIONS
